Area

Area is the amount of space enclosed within a two-dimensional shape. It tells us how much surface a shape covers and is always measured in square units (such as square centimeters, square inches, or square meters). Whether you’re measuring a room, a book cover, or a piece of land, calculating area helps determine how much space it occupies.

How to Calculate Area

1. Area of a Rectangle

Formula:Area=Length×WidthArea=Length×Width

Example:
A rectangle has a length of 5 units and a width of 4 units.

Area=5×4=20 square units

Area=5×4=20 square units

2. Area of a Square

Formula:Area=Side×Side=Side2Area=Side×Side=Side2

Example:
A square has a side length of 3 units.

Area=3×3=9 square units.

Area=3×3=9 square units.

3. Counting Unit Squares (Grid Method)

If a shape is drawn on grid paper, count the number of 1-unit squares inside it to find the area.

Example:
A shape covers 15 full squares on graph paper → Area = 15 square units.

Real-World Examples

Example 1: Garden Area

A garden is 6 feet long and 4 feet wide.

Area=6×4=24 square feet.

Area=6×4=24 square feet

Example 2: Book Cover

A book cover is 8 inches long and 5 inches wide.

Area=8×5=40 square inches.

Area=8×5=40 square inches

Example 3: Square Tile

A tile has 3-foot sides.

Area=3×3=9 square feet.

Area=3×3=9 square feet

Practice Exercises

Exercise 1: Find the Area of Rectangles

Calculate the area using Area = Length × Width:

  1. Length = 6 units, Width = 4 units → 6×4=246×4=24 sq. units
  2. Length = 8 units, Width = 5 units → 8×5=408×5=40 sq. units
  3. Length = 3 units, Width = 7 units → 3×7=213×7=21 sq. units
  4. Length = 9 units, Width = 2 units → 9×2=189×2=18 sq. units
  5. Length = 5 units, Width = 5 units → 5×5=255×5=25 sq. units

Exercise 2: Find the Area of Squares

Use the formula Area=Side×Side to find the area of each square:

  1. Side = 4 units
  2. Side = 7 units
  3. Side = 3 units
  4. Side = 6 units
  5. Side = 2 units

Exercise 3: True or False

Decide if the statements are true or false:

  1. The area of a rectangle with length 5 units and width 2 units is 10 square units.
  2. A square with side length 6 units has an area of 36 square units.
  3. The area of a rectangle with length 4 units and width 7 units is 12 square units.
  4. A square with side length 5 units has an area of 25 square units.
  5. The area of a rectangle with length 8 units and width 3 units is 24 square units.

Mastering area calculations helps in daily tasks, academics, and careers. Remember:

  1. Rectangles: Multiply length × width.
  2. Squares: Multiply side × side.
  3. Irregular shapes? Count unit squares or break into smaller rectangles.
